In addition to breaking research news, the 2007 AAAS Annual Meeting offers a full roster of social and networking opportunities for Newsroom registrants. Additional details will be forthcoming soon, but the following events will be part of the Newsroom events lineup:
International Press Reception — 8:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., Thursday, 15 February 2007, Golden Gate Room, 25th Floor of the Hotel Nikko, San Francisco. Each year, a welcoming reception is planned in honor of the many reporters who travel long distances to cover the AAAS Annual Meeting. All Newsroom registrants are invited to participate in this informal cocktail reception. Light hors d'oeuvres will be served.
European Commission Breakfast — This event, sponsored by the European Commission (EU), provides reporters with an opportunity to meet with leading EU scientists and policy-makers. It will be held in the Peninsula Room, 25th floor of the Hotel Nikko, Friday, 16 February 2007, from 8 a.m. - 9 a.m.
EurekAlert! Reception — EurekAlert! will host an afternoon reception from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Friday, 16 February 2007 near the Newsroom in the Hotel Nikko. All press registrants are invited to attend the event.
AAAS Science Journalism Awards — AAAS will host a special reception on Friday, 16 February from 7:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on the San Francisco Belle, a stern-wheeler cruise ship. The 2007 Science Journalism Awards will be presented during a reception and cruise aboard the Belle. This event is open to all 2007 AAAS Annual Meeting Newsroom registrants. Shuttle buses will be provided to and from the dock. Guests will be asked to show a 2007 AAAS Annual Meeting press registration badge as they board the ship. The awards are sponsored by Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, L.L.C.
The International Science Writers Association will have a business meeting on Saturday, 17 February at 5 p.m. in News Briefing Room, Nikko Grand Ballroom I.
Local Science Writers' Party — The Northern California Science Writers Association will host a gala party on Saturday, 17 February at the California Academy of Sciences. Watch for more details.
The World Federation of Science Journalists will meet on Sunday, 18 February in the late afternoon. There will be a preview of the 5th World Conference of Science Journalists, scheduled for 17-20 April 2007 in Melbourne, Australia.
Happy Hour — AAAS is arranging a Sunday evening "Happy Hour" in the reception area near the Newsroom headquarters in the Hotel Nikko. More details to come.
