Welcome. Thank you for your interest in the 2011 AAAS Annual Meeting.
Who are our Newsroom Registrants?
Press badges granting access to AAAS Newsroom resources and news briefings are freely available to all career science communicators, with appropriate credentials. Working reporters (staff or freelance), public information officers (PIOs), journalism professors and journalism students qualify for complimentary registration to the 2011 AAAS Annual Meeting through the AAAS Office of Public Programs.
We strongly encourage all newsroom participants to register in advance. Your press badge can then be picked up simply by presenting your valid photo identification to AAAS Newsroom staff on-site. You also can register on-site, with appropriate credentials and photo ID. When you register online, you also will receive a code number you can use to book a hotel room at a discounted rate through the AAAS Housing Bureau.
Who are our General Registrants?
Newsroom badges will not be issued to representatives of lobbying, special interest or advocacy organizations. Similarly, scientists, scientific journal editors, advertising or marketing professionals and investment analysts must register as general attendees and pay the fee. General registration for the 2011 AAAS Annual Meeting is available online at www.aaas.org/meetings.
I am a scientist, lobbyist or investment analyst, but I also have a newsletter and a Web page where I help to communicate science to the public. May I register as Press?
No. To receive complimentary Newsroom Registration, you must be a career science communicator whose primary occupation is science communications. Scientists or investment analysts who also communicate science are not eligible for complimentary newsroom registration. If you do not qualify for a newsroom credential but want to attend meeting symposia as a general registrant, please watch for registration details on the AAAS home page, or contact the Meetings staff at (202) 326-6450 or email@example.com.
Okay, I am a career science communicator. How can I register?
All career science communicators who are NASW members will receive a complimentary press badge. Current NASW membership and valid photo identification are required. Advance registration using the simple online form is strongly recommended. But, NASW members also may register on-site by presenting their current membership card and valid photo identification.
ALL OTHER NEWSROOM REGISTRANTS
If you are a career science communicator but not a member of NASW, you will be welcomed after you provide the following credentials:
Public Information Officers
Journalism Professors and Journalism Students
What do I do when I arrive in Washington?
To pick up a newsroom badge, go to Room 204A on the Second Level of the Washington Convention Center during the Newsroom hours listed to the left on this page. All advance registrants must present valid photo identification issued by a federal, state or local government. Those registering on-site must provide appropriate credentials (outlined above) as well as a valid photo ID.
Each registrant must pick up his or her own badge. For security reasons, registrants without proper identification will not be admitted. Press badges provide access to AAAS news briefings, exhibits and the general newsroom area. No visitors or family members are permitted inside the newsroom.
Those with newsroom badges shall not engage in publicity or promotional efforts in the newsroom work area (beyond providing materials for scheduled press briefings or placing brochures on the tables provided near the coffee lounge). Violations will result in revocation of credentials.
