This press release is available in Spanish and Portuguese.

In the auspicious Year of the Snake, BioMed Central, the open access publisher, is pleased to announce that the Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases (JVATiTD), the official academic journal of the The Center for the Study of Venoms and Venomous Animals (CEVAP) of São Paulo State University (UNESP), based in Brazil, has moved to BioMed Central's open access publishing platform. Also this journal marks growth of BioMed Central's portfolio of open access journals to 250.

Along with research into snakes JVATiTD publishes studies into all aspects of toxins, venomous animals, and their derivative products, as well as tropical diseases especially infectious diseases, parasites and immunology.

Deborah Kahn, BioMed Central's Publishing Director said "The launch of Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases is significant for BioMed Central as it is the first Brazilian academic journal to transfer to BioMed Central's open access platform, as well as being the 250th journal in our portfolio. We look forward to helping CEVAP and their authors increase the worldwide visibility of their research through open access publishing."

The journal was the first electronic scientific journal in Brazil when it launched as Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins in 1995. Initially it was distributed on 3.5-inch diskettes. It took to CD-Rom format in 1998, at which point it was first indexed in the free SciELO Brazil repository. In 2003, the journal increased in scope to include tropical diseases and JVATiTD became exclusively online-only in 2005, publishing open access issues on a quarterly basis.

Included in the launch is a study on the correlation between annual activity patterns of venomous snakes and rural people in the Niger Delta, southern Nigeria, and research which looks at the coagulant properties of the saw-scaled viper, Echis carinatus. In an editorial by the journal's Editor-in-Chief Prof Benedito Barraviera, the executive co-ordinator of CEVAP, states, "This partnership with BioMed Central will, beyond the shadow of a doubt, increase our impact factor and, consequently, improve our journal classification worldwide."

Authors based in Brazil can apply for a discounted article processing charge of £600 by mentioning the discount code JVATBRASIL at the payment page during submission. Also authors from member institutes, such as UNESP, may have their APC covered by the institute membership. For more information please visit the journal website.
