Belo Monte dam receives water diverted from the main channel of the rio Xingu. After powering the turbines of Belo Monte, the diverted water rejoins the rio Xingu. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Jan. 8, 2016 issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by K.O. Winemiller at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX, and colleagues was titled, "Balancing hydropower and biodiversity in the Amazon, Congo, and Mekong."
