The best way to accurately measure calories expended in physical activity is through a VO2 cardio-pulmonary instrument that determines the amount of oxygen consumed. Ioannis Pavlidis, director of the Computational Physiology Lab at the University of Houston, and his team devised a way to correlate iPhone accelerometer values with virtual VO2 measurements. Pavlidis monitors the computer while UH doctoral student Yuichi Fujiki walks on the treadmill during this calibration process at the National Center for Human Performance in the Texas Medical Center.
