Patrick Schnable, left, and Srinivas Aluru led Iowa State's contributions to a research project that has written the first draft of the corn genome sequence. Understanding the corn genome could help scientists improve corn plants so they withstand global climate change, add nutritional value to grain, sequester more carbon in the soil and boost yields.
