Brain Region Tied to Both Perception and Memory

Caption: When normal rats are shown two identical objects (as in left panel), they can keep this information in memory only up to 45 minutes. However, rats with more of a protein called RGS-14 in the visual cortex, an area of brain, are able to recall the same information after many months (right panel). This image accompanied the report "Role of Layer 6 of V2 Visual Cortex in Object-Recognition Memory," by M.F. Lopez-Aranda et al. appearing in the July 3, 2009 issue of Science.
