Josefina Olascoaga (University of Miami) and George Haller (McGill University) details the collaboration between these scientists which have developed mathematical methods to predict the movement of oil in water that are equally applicable to the spread of ash in the air, following a volcanic explosion, using Lagrangian Coherent Structures.
