Caption: In Batten disease, a rare but fatal neurodegenerative disorder in infants and children, proteins (shown in pink) accumulate in the brain and contribute to mental decline, paralysis and seizures. In mice with the infantile form of the disease, combination treatment with gene therapy and bone marrow transplantation reduced the buildup of proteins, dramatically increasing life span and improving motor function.
