Caption: Darrin Young, an electrical engineer at the University of Utah, has developed a tiny prototype microphone that would be implanted in the middle ear so that deaf people with future cochlear implants might not have to wear an external microphone and other electronics on the outside of the head. Young cautions the device still needs improvements and is about three years from testing in patients.
