Caption: Bill Hammond, professor in the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Science and director of the Nevada Geodetic Laboratory, with a GPS installation overlooking Lake Tahoe. Hammond and his team have recorded 1 millimeter annual increases in elevation of the entire 400-mile-long range that straddles the California/Nevada border, showing that it took just 3 million years for the range to reach its height.
