Caption: NASA's Terra satellite captured this image of a thick blanket of smoke blowing over the Sea of Okhotsk. The smoke is a result of many forest fires burning in eastern Russia. This image was captured by NASA's Terra satellite on June 29, 2012, at 01:10 UTC (June 28, 9:10 p.m. EDT/US) The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) also detected the heat signatures from the fires (in red). The heaviest smoke appears as a light brown color. As of June 25, there were over 6,000 acres burning in the Khabarovsk Territory, according to the Russian Ministry of Civil Defense, Emergencies, and Disaster Relief.
