Particles Announce Their Long-Distance Relationship

Caption: This is an artist's view of the experiment. Two photons emitted by two single atoms are brought to interference on a beam splitter. Joint detection of the photons creates entanglement of the distant atoms. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the July 6, 2012, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by J. Hofmann at Ludwig-Maximilians Universität München in Munich, Germany, and colleagues was titled, "Heralded Entanglement Between Widely Separated Atoms."
