Restoring Heart Function

Caption: Rats were treated with control Gelfoam patches or periostin-soaked Gelfoam patches after a myocardial infarction (heart attack). The images show a series of cross-sections of the heart; the left ventricle, where the infarction occurred, is on the right side of each image. At far right are close-up images of the infarct region. At 12 weeks, the periostin group had more muscle tissue in the left ventricle (shown in red), less scar tissue (in blue) and improved heart remodeling, indicated by a smaller central cavity and less compensatory thickening of the non-infarcted region.
