Fires in Central America

Caption: Plumes of smoke can be observed in the wetlands of the Pantanal. The fires from which the smoke originates are located south of Mandioré Lake, or Laguna Mandioré, a lake on the border of Brazil and Bolivia. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument onboard Terra has infrared capabilities that can detect heat from the various wildfires. The image was captured on August 02, 2012 at 14:30 UTC (10:30 am EDT). In the MODIS images, fires, or hot spots are color coded as red areas in imagery and smoke appears in light brown. Images are generated at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.
