Caption: This shows one of the researchers' protease plates, showing both the high number of cheaters and pyocyanin production (blue hue) by the cooperators. There was a grid in black ink on the back of the plate. Some of the grid marks show through the zone of protein clearing around the cooperator colonies. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the Oct. 12, 2012, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Ajai Dandekar at University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Wash., and colleagues was titled, “Bacterial Quorum Sensing and Metabolic Incentives to Cooperate.”
