Caption: Now the mainstay of the whale-watching industry, the humpback whale has recovered significantly from commercial whaling in the past several decades. An accurate pre-whaling population estimate, the study authors indicate, is important in considering future management decisions and protection for the species in North Atlantic waters. The genetic-based methods offer the only other means for pre-whaling estimates.
