Caption: Food irradiation can be used to control insects in fruit and vegetables (such as the onions shown here), extend the shelf life of fresh produce, and control pathogenic organisms in products such as poultry and red meat. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has an extensive base of experience in food irradiation including product testing, environmental assessment, facility design, operation, and economic assessment. A new spin-off company has been formed to commercialize this technology. Investors and joint venture partners are being sought to join this effort.
