Caption: A steelhead trout is anesthetized for tissue sampling at the dam trap in the Hood River, Oregon. Parents of this fish had returned less than 5 years earlier. Tissue samples were collected and a DNA parentage analysis determined the parents pedigree for evaluating adult-to-adult reproductive success. This fish was immediately released above the dam to spawn in the wild. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Oct. 5, 2007, issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Hitoshi Araki and colleagues at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore., was titled "Genetic Effects of Captive Breeding Cause a Rapid, Cumulative Fitness Decline in the Wild."
