Caption: A male hybrid between collared and pied flycatchers. Hybrids may be rare because female flycatchers have genetically inherited preferences for males of their own species. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Oct. 5, 2007, issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Stein A. Sæther at Netherlands Institute of Ecology in Heteren, Netherlands, was titled "Sex Chromosome-Linked Species Recognition and Evolution of Reproductive Isolation in Flycatchers."
