Reef Madness: Key Found to Moonlight Spawning (1 of 2)

Caption: Corals build the ramparts and framework of reefs that house an estimated millions species. Biologists have long wondered how they synchronize their internal clocks to spawn together on one of several nights every year. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Oct. 19, 2007 issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. O. Levy and colleagues at University of Queensland in St. Lucia, QLD, Australia, was titled 'Light-Responsive Cryptochromes from a Simple Multicellular Animal, the Coral Acropora millepora.'
