Yellowstone Caldera Inflating Faster (2 of 2)

Caption: Aerial view of a rare eruption of Steamboat Geyser, Norris Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park. This 1984 picture captures the grandeur of the world's largest concentration of geysers and hot springs, fed by Yellowstone's active volcanic system. Steamboat Geyser is the tallest in the world with its steam reaching heights of more than 150 meters. This geyser seldom erupts, only at months to year intervals. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Nov. 9, 2007 issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Wu-Lung Chang and colleagues at University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT, was titled "Accelerated Uplift and Magmatic Intrusion of the Yellowstone Caldera, 2004 to 2006."
