Ubiquitous Mudstones Need Rethinking (1 of 2)

Caption: The same ripple as above, but photographed from below with backlighting. Flow is again from right to left. The image shows internal layering (marked with arrows) that produces an overall texture resembling that of some sandstone beds. Most of the ripple was produced under steady flow conditions, but the flow fluctuated towards the end, which explains the more irregular appearance of the internal structure. This image relates to article that appeared in the Dec. 14, 2007 issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by by J. Schieber Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, was titled " Accretion of Mudstone Beds from Migrating Floccule Ripples."
