Ubiquitous Mudstones Need Rethinking (2 of 2)

Caption: Migrating ripple that consists of small clumps of clay particles, called floccules. Photographed towards end of flume experiment, water is still somewhat turbid. Water is flowing from right to left. The arc-like, or "œbarchan" shape of the ripple is also common in sand dunes. This image relates to article that appeared in the Dec. 14, 2007 issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by by J. Schieber Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, was titled " Accretion of Mudstone Beds from Migrating Floccule Ripples."
