Cells that Trigger Growth of Tumor Blood Vessels

Caption: A lung metastasis showing initiation of the angiogenic switch. CD31+ (red) blood vessels are seen to be invading the periphery of the metastasis. Some of these vessels have incorporated GFP+ (green) bone marrow derived-endothelial cells (right). Also several GFP+ bone marrow cells have been recruited to the boundary of the host tissue and the lesion. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Jan. 11, 2008, issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Dingcheng Gao and colleagues at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in Cold Spring Harbor, NY, was titled "Endothelial Progenitor Cells Control the Angiogenic Switch in Mouse Lung Metastasis."
