Calculating Scientists

Caption: In the Feb. 1 issue of the journal Physical Review Letters, University of Chicago physicists Wendy Zhang (left) and Laura Schmidt, scientifically explain a feature of convecting fluids that colleagues have observed in laboratory experiments. The feature may help explain how hotspot volcanism created the Hawaiian Islands and other such landforms.
