Connecting Tropical Dust With Ice Ages

Caption: This MODIS satellite image shows dust blowing off of mainland China over the Sea of Japan, the islands of Japan itself, and on out into the Pacific Ocean. New records from the equatorial Pacific Ocean reveal tight coupling between global climate and dust supply to tropical oceans through events such as that captured in this image. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Feb. 29, 2008, issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Gisela Winckler and colleagues at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University in Palisades, NY, was titled "Covariant Glacial-Interglacial Dust Fluxes in the Equatorial Pacific and Antarctica."
