New Microscope Shows Cells in 3-D

Caption: A projection of a mouse C2C12 nucleus at prophase created with 3D-SIM. Condensed chromosomes (stained with DAPI; shown in red) are visible in high detail, surrounded by the nuclear lamina (Lamin B inmmunofluorescensce, green), which is becoming visibly distorted and punctured by the forming mitotic spindle. This image relates to an article that appeared in the June 6, 2008, issue of Science , published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Lothar Schermelleh and colleagues at Ludwig Maximilians University Munich in Planegg-Martinsried, Germany was titled "Subdiffraction Multicolor Imaging of the Nuclear Periphery with 3-D Structured Illumination Microscopy."
