Ice Chunks Gouging the Antarctic Seafloor (7 of 7)

Caption: Marine biologist encounters a giant sponge nearly 20 m below the surface. Gigantism may have played a role in the success of some Antarctic marine animals and is one aspect of efforts to understand how evolution has responded to climate change in the past. This image relates to article that appeared in the July 18, 2008, issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Dan Smale the Natural Environment Research Council and colleagues, was titled "Ice Scour Disturbance in Antarctic Waters."
