Caption: A 500-nanometer cube of aerogel from the interior of the 3-D volume, reconstructed by X-ray diffraction. The foam structure shows globular nodes that are interconnected by thin beam-like struts. Approximately 85 percent of the total mass is associated with the nodes; relatively little of the mass is in the load-bearing links.
