Science coverThe AAAS Office of Public Programs works closely with public information officers to coordinate news announcements and media efforts for research forthcoming in Science, the weekly journal of AAAS, the science society. If you plan to promote an upcoming Science paper by scientists at your institution, please notify us in advance. We can link to your news releases and visuals, for the convenience of the media, and mention the availability of these materials in the weekly Science Press Package. (Our embargo policies apply to all related materials.)

SCIENCE EMBARGO GUIDELINES

The following guidelines are updated each week to reflect specific embargo dates for the next week’s issue of Science, 4 December 2009.

For research to be published in the 4 December 2009 issue of the journal, Science, collaborating public information officers must adhere to the following embargo guidelines:

(1) This story will be strictly embargoed--meaning that it cannot be published, broadcast, posted online, shared with non-journalists, or otherwise placed in the public domain--until 2:00 pm Eastern Time Thursday, 3 December 2009.

(2) Any news releases must be marked with the embargo time, date, and time zone. For example: "Embargoed: Not for Release Until 2:00 pm Eastern Time Thursday, 3 December 2009." If you convert the time-zone for local reporters, kindly double-check your conversion.

(3) Trusted, individual reporters only may be contacted no earlier than the Sunday at 8:00 pm Eastern Time immediately prior to your publication date. Be sure to ask reporters, before interviews begin, whether they agree to hold stories until the exact embargo-lift time.

(4) Embargoed news releases and related artwork may be posted only to approved, restricted-access sites such as EurekAlert!, http://www.eurekalert.org -- but no sooner than the Sunday at 8:00 pm Eastern Time immediately prior to publication. Do not, under any circumstances, post to open-access sites, or to any searchable address. Your press release may be submitted to EurekAlert! for processing at any time, as long as you note during the submission process that the release is tied to embargoed research in Science. Your press release will then be held for formatting and posted live to the embargoed site on the Sunday at 8:00 pm Eastern Time during the week of publication.

(5) Press conferences, for journalists only, may take place no earlier than 1 pm ET Thursday, 3 December 2009, embargoed for 2 pm. Earlier events are prohibited, except with written permission from the AAAS Office of Public Programs.

(6) Embargoed information cannot be shared with non-journalists; fed to satellites; posted to openly accessible web sites; routed to electronic wire services such as PRNewswire, Ascribe, or BusinessWire; or otherwise placed in the public domain. (These and other open-access services may be used as soon as the embargo lifts, as desired.)

(7) Copies of the embargoed Science paper may be distributed only by us. Kindly refer reporters to the AAAS Office of Public Programs at +1-202-326-6440 or scipak@aaas.org

For more information on the Science embargo guidelines, contact any member of the Science Press Package team at 202-326-6440, or scipak@aaas.org.
