Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute
Monterey Bay Aquarium And Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute To Host Eighth Deep-Sea Biology Symposium
An international symposium cosponsored by the Monterey Bay Aquarium
Research Institute (MBARI) and the Monterey Bay Aquarium will feature
more than 150 scientific presentations on the deep sea. The symposium
will be held September 22 through September 26 at the aquarium's
oceanside setting in Monterey, California. The goal of the organizers is
to bring together all members of the international deep-sea research
community to share their latest findings on the biology and ecology of
the deep sea.
Scientists from eighteen countries around the world will participate in
sessions focused on the following subjects:
- Sensory systems of deep-sea animals
- Evolution and diversity of deep-sea organisms
- Deep-sea populations and communities
- Sources and utilization of carbon in the deep sea
- Microorganisms in the deep sea
- Deep-sea pelagic communities
- Biology and ecology at hydrothermal vents and cold seeps
- Effects of environmental disturbance in the deep sea
Print and broadcast media are welcome to cover the symposium. However,
due to the limited capacity of aquarium conference facilities and
ongoing aquarium visitor activities, representatives of the press must
pre-register for admission as soon as possible with Kelly Burgess.
