National Science Foundation director Rita Colwell will announce two awards which will give the Next Generation Internet a global reach. The Asia Pacific Rim and Russia will link into NSF's very high performance Backbone Network Service (vBNS) as a result of grants to Indiana University and the University of Tennessee. The connections will support worldwide scientific, research and educational collaborations which require high bandwidth communications.
