Folate Status During Lactation

Maternal folate status during extended lactation and the effect of supplemental folic acid. by Amy D. Mackey and Mary Frances Picciano

The importance of folic acid supplementation through prolonged lactation was established in a study of 42 women consuming adequate dietary folate. During 6 mo lactation, plasma and milk folate and hematocrit were sustained by supplementing with 1 mg folic acid per day, but declined in unsupplemented women.
