A novel afterburner technology based on active combustion control increases the waste consumption of a commercially available marine incinerator while significantly reducing carbon monoxide emission. Developed at the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division in China Lake, Calif., the technology is a step toward compact, efficient marine incinerators with continuous emission monitoring and automated control. The Energy and Environmental Research Corporation recently tested the performance of the afterburner when used with a modified Golar 500C marine incinerator manufactured by TeamTec of Norway. The waste heat input was increased by a factor of 3.2 with the carbon monoxide emission reduced by a factor of 9. There was no visible smoke emission when the afterburner was operating. The afterburner performance can be improved further with real-time, closed-loop control to vary auxiliary fuel injection during waste feeding as demonstrated in sub-scale experiments.
