Research discovery points to potential osteoporosis remedy

Dr. Greg Mundy Hosts Press Conference at AAAS To Reveal New Findings

A recent discovery heralding the potential to remedy osteoporosis will be presented by research scientist Dr. Greg Mundy at a press conference December 2nd at offices of the American Association of the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C.

The journal Science will publish a paper by Mundy in their December 3rd edition citing new findings on the effects of statin drugs on bone formation. Dr. Mundy's research was conducted on rats. However, those discoveries caused his team to perform a limited survey of statin's effects in humans, and the bone-developing effects were discovered to be analogous.

The press conference is to be held at 1:30 p.m., December 2nd, in the American Association for the Advancement of Science's "Haskins" Conference Room at 1200 New York Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C.

While current treatments simply stabilize bone mass, Mundy's discovery shows it may be possible to treat patients by stimulating the formation of new bone and restoring bone that has been previously lost.

Osteoporosis is a major public health threat for 30 million Americans, with estimates that its prevalence may double in the 21st century as the numbers of elderly in the population increase significantly.

Mundy's findings may lead to the first new approaches to treating patients with osteoporosis in over 20 years.
