Science writing awards for acoustics

Melville, New York--February 5, 2001--In order to encourage popular writing about acoustical science and engineering, the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) sponsors two yearly awards for outstanding science writing.

The first award is for an acoustics article written by a journalist and the second is for an acoustics article written by an acoustics professional.

The awards are $1000 each and an award certificate, given to the winners by the ASA at its fall meeting, which takes place this year in Fort Lauderdale, FL between 3-7 December 2001.

The basic criteria for a submission are accessibility of the article to the general public, relevance to acoustics, and of course, the quality of the writing.

"Articles" may be from a variety of media, including video, major Internet sites, books, newspapers, magazines, etc. Articles must have been published or originally broadcast between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2000, and submissions need not be made by the author.

Multiple entries by a single author are encouraged, but please note that they will be pre-screened so that the 2-3 entries deemed to be the strongest candidates will be considered by the full committee. This year's submission deadline is April 15, 2001.

The most recent ASA Science Writing Awards for journalists were won by Kathryn Brown for several articles published in New Scientist magazine; and by Roland Pease and R. Boschetty for the BBC Radio program "Soundworks." William Hartmann of Michigan State University, won the award for acoustics professionals for his article "How We Localize Sound"which appeared in Physics Today.

Please send 4 copies of each article (legible photocopies are OK if originals are not available) making sure that your entry includes author name, publication name, and publication date to: Ms. Elaine Moran, Acoustical Society of America, Suite 1NO1, 2 Huntington Quadrangle, Melville, NY 11747-4502 Tel. 516-576-2360, Fax 516-576-2377, e-mail: elaine@aip.org
