Plastics role in auto industry discussed; plastic car displayed at ACS meeting

The current and future role of plastics in the automotive industry is the topic of a speech by Bruce Cundiff, Director of Automotive for the American Plastics Council, scheduled for delivery Monday, April 2, at the 221st national meeting of the American Chemical Society, in San Diego. Plastic industry experts believe the ever-increasing use of plastics in automobiles has improved performance, safety and fuel efficiency.

In conjunction with Cardiff's presentation, the industry will display a composite chassis sport utility vehicle, "the Baja," in the Industry Pavilion during regular exposition hours, April 2-4. The "Baja's" combination of thermoplastic skin and thermoset structures make it lightweight, durable, safe and fuel efficient, according to its designers. Ultraviolet inhibitors and waterproof sealing protect surfaces exposed to the elements, and the plastic skin eliminates the need for paint. The "Baja" is made by Automotive Design & Composites, Ltd., of San Antonio, Texas. The company's co-founders, Michael Van Steenburg, chief executive officer, and James M. Kimbrough, president, will be available during the hours it is on display.
