AAAS seminar: Flesh and Machines

Washington, D.C.-May 22, 2001-Once viewed as "science fiction," the evolution of artificial intelligence and humanoid robots is on the road to becoming "science fact." The American Association for the Advancement of Science and its Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion (DoSER) will examine and explore the current state of the development of artificial intelligence and humanoid robotics through a seminar titled "Flesh and Machines." Speakers will consider the underlying philosophical principles that guide its research and development and how new discoveries affect the future of humans. Speaking at the seminar is Rodney Brooks, Ph.D., Director and Fujitsu Professor at MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Widely known for his research on the engineering of intelligent robots to interact in a human environment, Dr. Brooks is most famous for the creation of the humanoid robots, Cog and Kismet. More information on DoSER and its seminar series is available at http://www.aaas.org/spp/dser/seminar/.
