Why was the award created?
To recognize and honor the career achievements of journalists who have documented the considerable progress in the fight against heart disease and stroke. This career achievement award was created in memory of Howard L. Lewis, who led the Association’s national science and media relation’s staff for two decades.
Who is eligible to enter?
All United States local and national health and science journalists are eligible. Daniel Q. Haney of the Associated Press was chosen as the first recipient of the award in 2000.
What will the award winner receive?
The recipient of the award receives a $2,000 honorarium and a citation. The honorarium is given at a reception at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2001, Sunday, November 11,
6 - 7:30 p.m. in the News Media Center, 4th floor of the Hilton Hotel, Anaheim, Calif. Airfare and one night’s lodging are also provided to the recipient.
