30 years of fighting cancer: Forum discusses future of war on cancer

On Nov. 7, 2001, leading research, clinical and policy experts will discuss progress and setbacks in the fight against cancer at a national forum sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Americans for Medical Progress Educational Foundation (AMP). Experts also will comment on just-released policy recommendations for prevention, treatment and funding priorities, proposed by the National Cancer Legislative Advisory Committee.

Speakers include:

-- The Honorable Paul G. Rogers, a leader in the passage of the National Cancer Act and current Chair of Research!America.

--Brian J. Druker, M.D., Professor of Medicine, Division of Hematology & Medical Oncology, Oregon Health SciencesUniversity. Dr. Druker developed Gleevec or STI-571, approved by the FDA earlier this year for two cancers.

--Samuel E. Broder, M.D., Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs, Celera Genomics. Dr. Broder was Director of the National Cancer Institute from 1989 - 1995.

--Otis W. Brawley, M.D., leads Emory University's participation in the Georgia Cancer Coalition Center of Excellence and is Medical Director, Grady Memorial Hospital. He was Director of the Office of Special Populations Research and Assistant Director of the Office of Science Policy at the NCI.

--Ellen Stovall, President, National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, a leading national advocacy organization, promoting access and quality care for cancer patients. Ms. Stovall is a two-time cancer survivor.

--Anna D. Barker, Ph.D., President and CEO of BIO-NOVA Inc., a member of the American Association of Cancer Research and the National Cancer Legislative Advisory Committee (NCLAC). Dr. Barker will present a new NCLAC report, "Conquering Cancer: A National Battle Plan to Eradicate Cancer in Our Lifetime."
