A celebration of chemistry and art – public events in Washington, DC
Collage...fresco...music...photography...stained glass…watercolors...and chemistry. These are highlights of the nationwide 2001 National Chemistry Week celebration, November 4-10, coordinated by the American Chemical Society and its 189 local sections. The celebration is an opportunity for children of all ages to have fun learning about chemistry and art.
The schedule of public events in Washington, DC follows. Activities are free unless noted.
Saturday, November 3, 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Smithsonian Museum of African Art, featuring Conservator Dana Moffett.
Behind-the-scenes tour of the conservation lab and art projects class.
General admissions tickets are $38 for one adult and one child; $30 for young associates.
Tuesday, November 6, 10:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library, 901 “G” Street, NW
John Fortman, Wright State University, Dayton, conducts chemical demonstrations.
Middle and high school students may attend at 10:30 a.m. or 1:00 p.m.
Adult demonstrations will be held at 6:00 p.m.

Chemical Society of Washington co-sponsor’s “Winslow Homer’s Watercolor Pigments” at the American Chemical Society, 1155 16th Street, NW.

Across the country, ACS local sections, industrialists, educators and promoters of chemistry awareness will have events in museums, malls, libraries, schools and parks, displaying the wonders of chemistry and art.
This annual weeklong celebration begins at the Society’s Washington, DC headquarters at 1:00 p.m. on November 5, with a 125th anniversary tribute, featuring John Fortman of Wright State University. Fortman will describe the preservation and restoration of art in his presentation, “Science of Ar,.” and will conduct chemical demonstrations involving color changes, pigments, sculptures, and sound pitches.
