LLNL scientists to simulate 1991 Oakland Hills fire on eve of 10-year anniversary

What: Using advanced computer models, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory scientists will simulate the spread of the Oakland hills fire that claimed 25 lives and destroyed approximately 3,000 dwellings on Oct. 20, 1991.

Who: Atmospheric scientists, who are part of the Wildfire Behavior Prediction Initiative at LLNL, combine regional weather prediction, vegetation and topographic information to model the behavior of wildfires. The program is designed to eventually provide around-the-clock guidance to fire managers to help them safely and effectively use their firefighting resources when battling fires.

When: Friday, Oct. 19 at 10 a.m., one day before the 10-year anniversary of the Oakland hills fire

Where: LLNL’s National Atmospheric Release Advisory Center, B170
