The Future of the Amazon
Panama City, Panama. Leading authorities on Amazonian ecology and conservation will gather at the headquarters of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) on January 29, 2002,for a half-day symposium entitled "The Future of the Amazon: Impacts of Deforestation and Climate Change". Dr. Cristian Samper, Acting Director at STRI, and Dr. Eric Dinerstein, Chief Scientist at the World Wildlife Fund-US, will open the proceedings, which will include presentations by Dr. William Laurance, STRI; Dr. Philip Fearnside, National Institute for Amazonian Research in Brazil; Dr. Daniel Nepstad, Woods Hole Research Center, USA; Dr.Wim Sombroek, Pilot Program to Conserve the Brazilian Rain Forest, Brazil and Dr. Roni Avissar, Duke University, USA.
