First International Conference on Women in Physics to be held in Paris

More than 300 physicists from 65 countries will gather in Paris at the first International Conference on Women in Physics, 7-9 March 2002. The conference aims to explore why so few women go into physics and to develop strategies for increasing their participation and impact.

“Internationally, women are underrepresented in physics and related fields, such as engineering, that require a strong physics background. As one moves up the academic ladder and with each promotion in industrial and national labs, the numbers fall off rapidly,” said Dr Marcia Barbosa, chair of the organizing committee.

Conference sessions will focus on:

“We need to understand why more women aren’t attracted to physics and what the barriers are for successful career paths. The conference will allow us to make specific recommendations about how to increase female participation and success in physics and physics-related endeavors,” said Dr Judy Franz, Associate Secretary-General of International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), the meeting’s organizing body.

Eleven invited speakers will describe the situations, barriers, and solutions from every region of the world and from both developed and developing nations. The conference will convene at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, with the financial support of more than 20 national and international agencies and organizations.
