To discuss this week’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report article, Progress Toward the Global Elimination of Poliomyelitis, 2001.
Great progress has been made in the global initiative to eradicate polio, one of the world’s most devastating and feared diseases. During 2001, only 10 countries experienced indigenous transmission of poliomyelitis, down from 125 in 1988, suggesting that the world is close to becoming free of polio. Dr. Zuber will discuss global eradication efforts and preparations for post-eradication activities.
