European research area creates new opportunities for cooperation

A Washington Science Policy Alliance science and technology policy seminar

Washington, D.C. - 02 May 2002 - Following the establishment of a single currency, the Euro, Europe is contemplating the next step in integration. At the seminar, "The European Research Area: A Coherent S&T Policy for Europe and New Opportunities for Cooperation," Dr. Achilleas Mitsos, Director General for Research of the European Commission, will address the importance of integrating European research. He will be discussing European Commission strategies and the effects integration will have on the science and technology community.

Dr. Mitsos is currently the top-ranking career official in the Directorate General responsible for European Community research. He has served with the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has been with the European Commission since 1985. He has taught at the University of Athens and the London School of Economics, and is the author of many articles and books on European integration.

This seminar will be held in the auditorium of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Washington, DC. Attendance will be limited by the capacity of the auditorium; first-come first-served.
