Stroke mortality and nonfatal self-inflicted Injuries

WHO: Dr. Janet Croft, CDC heart disease and stroke expert

Dr. Alex Crosby, CDC suicide prevention expert

WHAT: To discuss two articles in this week’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, “State-Specific Mortality from Stroke and Distribution of Place of Death- United States, 1999” and “Nonfatal Self-Inflicted Injuries Treated in Hospital Emergency Departments- United States, 2000”

Dr. Croft will discuss key trends in stroke mortality. Recognizing stroke symptoms and seeking prompt emergency assistance can reduce stroke death and disability. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States with about 167,000 stoke-related deaths annually.

Dr. Crosby will address trends in nonfatal self-inflicted injuries treated in hospital emergency departments. A large number of self-inflicted injuries occur each year and many of these types of injuries are suicide attempts. This study provides national estimates to help monitor trends and evaluate prevention programs and policies.
