An array of energy experts and noted scholars will provide a variety of perspectives about this complex topic Jan. 17, 2003 when the University of Houston Law Center's Institute for Energy, Law & Enterprises (IELE) presents "Behind the Gas Pump: Implications of Our Dependence on Mideast Oil."
The all-day conference will examine the historical origins of importing oil from the Middle East, the availability of alternative sources, the American public's attitude toward Mideast conflicts, the environmental consequences of continuing oil consumption and the role of technological innovation in determining this country's future energy policies.
Participants include Paul Chu, professor of physics and former director of the Texas Center for Superconductivity, University of Houston; Herman Franssen, former senior economic adviser to the Minister of Petroleum and Minerals in Oman and onetime chief economist of the International Energy Agency; Alistair Lucas, chair of natural resources law at the University of Calgary; Michelle Michot Foss, executive director of the IELE; Michael Economides, UH professor of chemical engineering; and Richard Murray, director of the Center for Public Policy, UH.
The event, which will be held in the Hilton University of Houston Hotel's Shamrock Room, will feature a luncheon address on U.S. Middle East policy by Judith Kipper, senior fellow of the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. In addition to the individual presentations, there will be panel discussions among the participants and questions from the audience will be taken. Ticket information for the public is available at 713/743-4364.
