Capacity building for science academies in countries with predominantly Muslim communities

The InterAcademy Panel for International Issues (IAP), together with the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), will hold a workshop from 5-7 March in Trieste, Italy, to discuss how to build scientific capacity in countries with predominantly Muslim communities. The workshop will conclude with a one-day symposium examining science, religion and values in today's world.

Among those scheduled to participate are Saleh A. Al-Athel, President, King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia; Atta-ur-Rahman, Chair, Higher Education Commission, Pakistan; Mahmud Kerimov, President, Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan; Abdul Bari Rashed, President, Academy of Sciences of Afghanistan; Zaharudin Idrus, President, Malaysian Academy of Sciences; and Bruce Alberts, President of the U.S National Academy of Sciences.

The workshop is funded by the Organization of Islamic Conference Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH), the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.

The InterAcademy Panel on International Issues (IAP) is a global network of 88 national academies. The Third World Academy of Sciences, which hosts IAP, is an international organization operating under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Both IAP and TWAS are headquartered in Trieste, Italy.
